We’re here to break down some labels you might not be familiar with, so you can be totally informed while you’re searching for a new show to binge.

  • Shonen: Shonen is an action- and adventure-packed genre that’s technically meant to cater toward boys (older kids and teens), though plenty of people beyond the target demographic enjoy shonen series. Shonen is a large umbrella that encompasses a lot of different subgenres, like sports, slice of life, comedy, etc.
    • Examples: Dragon Ball, One Piece, My Hero Academia
  • Shoujo: Shoujo is a more romantic- and relationship-based genre that’s geared toward girls (tweens and teens).

  • Seinen: Seinen is a wide genre that’s technically meant to target older men (e.g., college students, guys with jobs, etc.). A variety of sub-genres can fall in seinen territory, like sci-fi, sports, comedy, and more.
    • Examples: Tokyo Ghoul, One Punch Man, Vinland Saga
  • Josei: Josei is a genre that caters to women (typically older than the shoujo target audience) and focuses on more grounded, mature stories.
    • Examples: Paradise Kiss, Princess Jellyfish, Honey and Clover
  • Slice of life: The slice of life genre typically portrays realistic, everyday experiences and settings.
    • Examples: Usagi Drop, Hyouka, Clannad
  • Isekai: Isekai is a special type of fantasy genre that revolves around characters being transported to a completely different world/universe.
    • Examples: Re:Zero, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Sword Art Online
  • Mecha: The mecha genre centers around large robots/mechs and characters who use these robots to enter battle.
