All About Genshin Impact
First introduced on September 28, 2020, the open-world game known as Genshin Impact was released to players around the world—and the video game universe as we know it would never be the same. With 65 million players enjoying the Genshin each month, this free-to-play game has become well-loved for its immersive atmosphere, in-depth storyline, and wide cast of characters.
What is Genshin Impact about?
Genshin Impact follows the story of twins Lumine and Aether, who have the power to travel to and explore different worlds. Upon reaching their newest destination, they find it rife with chaos and destruction—but, upon turning to leave, they find themselves stopped by a deity who refers to herself as “the sustainer of heavenly principles.” She easily overpowers the twins and separates them, leaving the player to wake up (as either Lumine or Aether) alone in a strange new world known as Teyvat.
With the help up a flying, pixie-like creature known as Paimon, Lumine/Aether (referred to as the Traveler) journeys through Teyvat on a quest to find their lost sibling, where they encounter new friends, enemies, and gods along the way.
What type of game is Genshin Impact?
Genshin is classified as an open-world action role-playing game (RPG). Throughout the game, you wander the continent of Teyvat with up to 4 characters in your party that you can switch between (with your party being customizable at any time). Each character specializes in a specific element and weapon, which informs the unique attacks and abilities that they have.
As an open-world game, Genshin allows the player to journey through the seven nations of Teyvat, which are all governed by a specific Archon (or god) who presides over a specific element. These nations and their elements include:
-
Mondstadt: Anemo/air (governed by Barbatos)
-
Liyue: Geo/earth (governed by Rex Lapis/Morax)
-
Inazuma: Electro/lightning (governed by the Raiden Shogun)
-
Sumeru: Dendro/plant (governed by the Lesser Lord Kusanali)
-
Fontaine: Hydro/water (governed by Focalors)
-
Natlan: Pyro/fire (governed by Murata)
-
Snezhnaya: Cryo/ice (governed by The Tsaritsa)
How do you play Genshin Impact?
Genshin Impact can be played on PC, Android, iOS, PS4, and PS5 (and Mac, with the help of a Boot Camp partition). The game has both multiplayer and cross-play functions, meaning it can be played with friends across different devices.
-
Genshin accounts are region-based, so you can only play with friends from the same region as you.
How do you unlock characters on Genshin Impact?
Genshin uses a “gacha” (lottery-based) system for unlocking characters. In the game, you can collect primogems, an in-game currency that allows you to buy “pulls” for certain character and weapons banners, which change every few weeks. You can also buy Genesis Crystals (with real money), which can be converted into primogems.
Characters are classified as either 4-star or 5-star, with 5-star characters being exceedingly rarer to pull. Through various quests in the game, you can meet and interact with all of these characters on your adventures.
- Certain characters can be unlocked for free, like Amber, Lisa, Kaeya, Collei, Barbara, Lynette, and Xiangling.
-
Genshin Impact characters are often categorized on a tier list based on how effective and useful a given character’s abilities and skills are in the current game meta. You can view them on sites like Game8.
