5 Totally Radical Facts about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, four turtle brothers that live in the sewers of New York City and fight evil using their martial arts skills. The franchise initially began as a comic book series in 1984, and later branched out into an animated series, video games, several movies, and a wide range of toys. Here are 5 lesser-known facts about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
- The franchise began as a parody of comic books like X-Men and Daredevil. TMNT has never taken itself very seriously, and the writers’ original goal was simply to poke fun at the serious tone of comic books that were coming out back in the 80s.
- The creator of The Big Bang Theory wrote the animated TMNT series theme song. Small world, right? Back in the 90s, sitcom creator Chuck Lorre penned one of the catchiest theme songs of all time for the TMNT cartoon. Any TMNT fan can sing it word for word, even 30 years later. Heroes in a half shell–turtle power!
- In the comics, Shredder was killed off in the first issue. Shredder was one of the central villains in the animated series, but he didn’t leave much of an impression in the comic books. In fact, he blew himself up with a grenade in issue #1! Later, when Shredder appeared in the animated series, he was the turtles’ main foe. Now he’s considered to be one of the best villains of all time.
- There have been 3 attempts to add a fifth turtle to the TMNT canon. Some of the later movies tried their hand at adding another turtle to the mix, but those characters never really caught on. The ninja turtles work best as a quartet, and that’s just how it is.
- Shredder’s character was literally inspired by a cheese grater. When he was writing issue #1, the co-creator of the comic book series, Kevin Eastman, was just messing around when stuck his hand inside a cheese grater. He imagined a character covered with sharp metal blades from head to toe and voila, and Shredder was born. He even wanted to call the character The Grater, but I think we can all agree that Shredder is much cooler.
